California state air board officials are expected to press the administration of Gov. Jerry Brown (D) and possibly state lawmakers to carve out a streamlined permitting path for new hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle fueling stations around the state, arguing that the environmental benefits from the cleaner transportation fuel justify quicker permitting.

The Senate Banking Committee's component of the surface transportation bill, due for markup Feb. 2, would boost EPA's role in defining a "clean fuel vehicle" and expand the current program for encouraging cleaner vehicles in public transportation fleets to include refueling infrastructure.
